Les Sans Culottes: Fixation Orale [Apr. 19th, 2004|08:24 pm]
collating bones
Mock frog soup--faux-French people from NYC, with multiple singers and '60s-garage-y instruments. I saw them when they were mostly a Gainsbourg/Dutronc cover band, and hadn't realized they'd written a bunch of original songs since then; I'm pretty impressed by a couple of them, especially "Allô Allô" ("...je t'aime je t'aime") and "Ménage à Toi" (and yes that's how they spell it). Also a faboo version of "Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son." Every time I ask a French-speaking person what that song means, I'm told "oh, it's untranslatable, it's very sophisticated wordplay." Which of course makes me really want to attempt an equally complicated English rendering. Just now I ran it through Google's translator, which tells me that the title is "Headstock of Wax, Headstock of Sound." Guess that might be a problem.
