David Byrne: Grown Backwards [Feb. 13th, 2004|08:55 pm]
collating bones
A pleasant surprise--not as pleasant as it'd be to hear him, say, in a band with a genuine rhythm section again, and the two opera covers are sort of a problem, but... nice to hear. Especially entertaining and unexpected: the other cover on the album, which is of Lambchop's "The Man Who Loved Beer." He's trying to be aphoristic again, which is a good sign. And I know I know he doesn't want to reconcile with the Talking Heads, but he needs them even more than Elvis C. needs the Attractions--he needs collaborators who can encourage him when he's actually being clever or wise, and who can kick his songs' ass when he isn't, and who can hit the groove so he doesn't have to sing all the time.
