Amps for Christ: The People at Large [Feb. 2nd, 2004|10:50 pm]
collating bones
This one came out of nowhere and surprised me a lot: sitar/tabla raga-based pieces, voice-and-guitar pieces, a couple of electronic-buzz versions of "Auld Lang Syne," some free noise, about half of it pretty appealing on first listen. I've been hearing their name for ages, & vaguely knew that they were a spinoff of Man Is the Bastard, so I always figured they were a hardcore band, but apparently they're HxC in the same sense (but not the same way) that "10 Notes on a Summer's Day" is. Bits of it remind me of Pearls Before Swine in a strange way; maybe it's the calligraphy in the booklet, more likely it's the sense I get that they might take a few decades off at some point and then come right back to where they left off. Must investigate more.
