Bonnie "Prince" Billy: Sings Greatest Palace Music [Feb. 2nd, 2004|06:26 pm]
collating bones
Not a greatest-hits: a re-recorded greatest-hits from the Palace period, i.e. when he still wrote songs I cared about. The point seems to be, as Xgau (I'm paraphrasing from memory) said of Dylan's "Hard Rain," to do something from which the old standards will never recover--yeah, honky-tonk piano version of "I Am a Cinematographer," disaffected demelodized remake of "Ohio River Boat Song," great ideas (ptui). Not quite self-parody, not quite self-tribute, just sort of self-alteration for its own sake, like growing a big bushy beard. Which, looking at the back cover, he appears to have done. Wholly unnecessary, and borderline unpleasant. Possibly done because it was wholly unnecessary, although that doesn't make it touching or fun or meaningful.
