The Ukrainians: Istoriya [Feb. 1st, 2004|12:06 pm]
collating bones
A greatest-hits by the Wedding Present's Ukrainian folk spinoff band. I'd heard Vorony before, and some tapes of Peel's show where he'd played a couple of the Smiths covers, but I'd missed a lot of this stuff, and it's super-ultra-fun. (Although I hadn't realized that "Oi Divchino" was their own composition--obv. I'd known GodCo's cover of it for ages...) About a third of it is their covers, which run the risk of corniness but only actually indulge with the Ukrainian version of "Anarchy in the U.K."--their "Venus in Furs" is so smart and lovely that it reminds me that I still need to put together my all-covers parallel-world version of The Velvet Underground and Nico. Playing is consistent and muscular, enough that I'm surprised that Pete Solowka (the Wedding Present guitarist guy) is one of only two regular members of the band.
