Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Concert at Philharmonic Hall [Jan. 30th, 2004|06:02 pm]
collating bones
So you know how the acoustic/electric "Judas" concert that was a couple of volumes ago is really great in its electric half but the acoustic half is kind of yeesh? This one, from Halloween 1964, is all acoustic and very yeesh. Dylan already sounds bored silly by a lot of his songs--he hasn't yet learned how to mess with them, really--and the audience is worshipful in a way that reminds me of certain decent but low-on-material comedians' audiences who come to cheer the lines they already know by heart. Entertaining moment: Dylan forgets the first line of "I Don't Believe You," and the audience nudges him forcefully. The interpreting-the-master's-words what-could-he-have-meant? liner notes annoy me a little, too.
