Lansing-Dreiden: The Incomplete Triangle [Jan. 22nd, 2004|07:37 pm]
collating bones
The 20-years-later effect is a great thing to watch: retro-chic has now caught up with 1983-1984, and specifically the brittle electronics of the Factory scene from around that time--this reminds me a lot in tone of the Cool as Ice compilation I liked so much last year. (Four years from now people will be making records that sound like "Mercedes Boy"!) But getting the tone right is not the same as getting the songwriting right--took about 25 min. before I thought "oh, hey, this sounds pretty good in that Section 25 way." But I was really tired at the time. Extra points for namechecking Lansing, of course.

See, I'm afraid the retro time period is compressing, that the 20-years thing is part of the social contract long since abandoned by the younger generation, like giving your seat for old people on the bus. In some circles, I'm seeing grunge-retro (though there IS, honestly, some overlap with those who never left), Smashing-Pumpkins-retro, etc. Remember that Onion article, "We Are Running Out of Past"? Once again, it speaks prophecy in the guise of satire.
