Mose Allison: Allison Wonderland [Jan. 27th, 2002|09:41 am]
collating bones
The insoluble problem with a Mose Allison retrospective is that the guy has been doing exactly the same thing over and over for the last 45 years. And it's good! Really good! But he plays and sings everything with exactly the same tone, so aside from hitting a couple of the absolute classic songs ("Young Man Blues," the remarkable and permanently topical "Everybody Cryin' Mercy"), it's 150 minutes of... exactly the same thing. Meaning that a 35-minute greatest-hits LP is probably what's called for. Or any one of his actual albums. Maybe a side at a time. They're all fine. Just about equally, really.
