Silver Jews: Bright Flight [Nov. 13th, 2001|03:32 pm]
collating bones
Berman's pretty severely stranded in his own reputation now--a lot of these lyrics are "'Silver Jews lyrics'" in multiple pairs of quotation marks, and he delivers them like he couldn't be less interested in putting them across. And what he's gained in not having "Steve Malkmus's other band," he's lost in Malkmus--not least in the guitar playing. One gorgeous exception: "Tennessee," which is not the Arrested Development song by a long margin, but when Cassie Marrett starts singing in the chorus, it's like someone's opened a door and let in sunlight in a place where it wasn't clear there was a door.
