The White Stripes, "Jolene" [Oct. 16th, 2001|01:16 am]
collating bones
Fine and all, but I sort of feel scooped--I used to sing this with the Media, but we couldn't find a way to make it work right. (Disco beat/country guitars? Um, no.) And now he's DONE the guy-singing-"Jolene" thing. In any case, it really is one of the best-written songs I know, even though I knew it first in the Strawberry Switchblade version and always hear that at the back of my head. L. points out that the phrasing of the lyric is really imaginative: "He talks about you in his sleep/And there's nothing I can do to keep/From crying when he calls your name, Jolene." You don't often see enjambment around a rhyme, especially in country songs as straightforward as this one.
