Chitlin' Fooks: Chitlin' Fooks [Jul. 11th, 2001|08:34 am]
collating bones
Carol Van Dyk of Bettie Serveert, and friends (some of whom sing some of the time), doing the American country thing. Yes, it's Dutch Americana. Franklin noted that "You Dream of Him" is smartly constructed, and the whole thing's pleasant from a distance, but when you pay attention to it there's something a little peculiar about it, like trying to eat SoySilk instead of yogurt. I mean, not to get all essentialist--some of my favorite country types aren't Americans--and not that it's bad, it just seems to hit a different mark than the one it aims for.
