KaraokeJournal: just start talking at the sound of the tone [Nov. 27th, 2007|07:00 am]
collating bones
A few weeks ago, I noticed a curious listing in Chopsticks' book: something called "Oh Superman," credited to Lynn Anderson. Now, a quick Google of that title and performer together yielded nothing but... karaoke, specifically a karaoke disc that's otherwise all early-'80s new wave. "Man," I thought, "if this is the misidentified track I think it is, it would be the very most ill-suited-to-karaoke song of all time, beating out even Fatboy Slim's 'Praise You.' Which means I have to do it... but at the beginning of the night, when there's nobody in the room."

And sure enough:

Having bummed everyone in the building out for 8 1/2 minutes, I tried to acquit myself but continued to sing badly all night: Death Cab for Cutie's "Soul Meets Body," Frida's "I Know There's Something Going On," and finally "Mr. Roboto."

The yacht-rock dude with the excellent voice turned up again (with a bunch of his friends) and did "Candle in the WInd" etc. Indigo came by and sang "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"; Kimmie did "I Don't Know How to Love Him." A good night, despite my contributions.

High-larious.

The first Laurie Anderson song I ever heard.

They're American Planes.
